Every summer the UNCG Speech and Hearing Center offers a two week half-day camp for children with delays in speech, language, reading and writing.

The camp reinforces and enhances children’s language-literacy skills through offering a therapeutic and educationally intensive program. Graduate students conduct educational learning opportunities based on themes such as Garden Fun, Rocks and Shells, Summer Splash, Animal World, and MovieTime under the supervision of national-certified speech-language pathologists. Instruction is provided through two large group interactions, learning centers and 20-30 minute individual sessions.

Before camp begins, each child receives a speech-language screening and a summary report of results. Also, a structured family educational component is incorporated within the camp sessions and is key to the program’s success. Parents observe through a two-way window and participate in the instructional process and are provided therapeutic/educational information through at least three parent seminar sessions. The parents are given lesson plans with general group goals and individual goals and a final progress note on the last day of camp.
